It’s only been in the last year that I’ve realized I have Social Anxiety and even more recent that I’ve connected it to elements of my home life.  Sadie of Your Social Anxiety Bestie did a podcast episode with her husband about being the spouse of someone with Social Anxiety and that’s when it clicked for me.  Many of the reactions I have to my husband or my kids really can be linked back to social anxiety.  I’ve decided to write up a series of posts about how my anxiety affects my marriage and family in various areas.  I thought I’d organize it by rooms in the house, just to help me focus.

I hope to release a post a week.  I feel like setting this goal will have a few benefits.

  • I will have a focus for each week and a feeling of accomplishment.
  • I will think through what in my life is anxiety and where I can be prepared for triggers before they happen.
  • Maybe someone will see these posts and recognize themselves or a loved one and it will help them feel less alone.

I think it’s a misconception that people with Social Anxiety only get anxiety when they leave the house and interact with strangers. For me, at least, this is just not true. I get anxiety talking to my husband of 20+ years, my mother, my sister, my best friends, and even with my kids. It may show itself differently with them than with strangers, but it’s still there. And it’s something I’m trying to work on.

Look for the first in this series tomorrow!
