This x-ray is from a year and a half ago. Which was more than a year after I broke this wrist.
Actually, I broke both wrists. And an elbow. It was bad. I was running (for exercise) and praying for my nephew that was going in for surgery on HIS broken arm that morning. My foot hit a tiny bump and I went sprawling. I couldn’t do anything for myself for over a week, then was severely limited for 5 more weeks. I went through PT and even “graduated” from that. But it still hurt. So I got a cortisone shot that hurt like hell and barely changed the pain. Four months later I got another shot, same deal. So I switched doctors. That’s when this x-ray was taken.
At that time, I was informed that I had a “die-punch fracture” (that divot in the biggest bone that shouldn’t be there). This was news to me. I was told that the only way to fix it would be surgery, but that might not make any difference and he didn’t recommend it. So I took his advice and have adapted all exercise to stay off my wrist. Occasionally I overdo it and I get achy, but I’ve been doing well the last year and a half.
On Friday we went to a water park and I must have done something to aggravate it because it was super painful by evening. Unfortunately, it was a holiday weekend, so I told my husband I’d call on Tuesday if it was still hurting. It was, so I made an appointment to get it looked at. The day after I made the appointment, it started feeling much better. I considered canceling, but they had a 24 hour cancelation policy, so I decided it would be better to just go. The whole drive there I rehearsed my apology for wasting his time. I just knew he was going to say that it was the same situation as before and just don’t do anything to put pressure on it.
I was wrong. I sat in shock when he came in and showed me the x-ray from today (I didn’t get a picture of it, unfortunately). Apparently that pointy bit that’s pretty rounded in the above picture, is now a sharp point, thanks to the bones rubbing together and filing it down. While that portion of bone is not important, the bone it’s rubbing against is and he doesn’t want things to get worse. His recommendation is surgery to remove the tip of that bone and to fill in the divot, the sooner the better. He did say I could just put on a brace and live with it, but he didn’t think that was a good idea, long term. So now I’m working on getting cleared for surgery. And this morning I thought I was being overly dramatic!
