Wow. Five weeks in and I’ve written nearly 17,000 words. I’m actually meeting my goal of 3,000 words or more per week. Which hopefully means I’ll meet my goal of finishing this first draft by the end of the 12 weeks.
I do have a small concern, though. The RPG scenes take way longer to write than the real-world scenes. Mostly because I spend so much time rolling dice and looking up creatures, spells, and other things in D&D Beyond. I know I’m not doing D&D exactly, but I don’t want someone that’s an avid RPG player reading it and getting annoyed at how far off I am. The problem is, I’ve never hosted a game and only played a few times. I’ve listened in on my kids playing the last couple of months and watched/listened to episodes of Critical Roll, but I’m not sure if that’s enough background knowledge.
I’m going to try not to worry too much about the accuracy of the RPG play for this first draft. But I’m thinking it might behoove me to actually play some D&D so that when I start revisions I can be more accurate. I just need to figure out how to do that. My husband plays D&D with friends once a month, but I don’t think I’d want to play with them. I wonder if there’s an online group that I could join.
Anyway, that’s not the step I’m in and Sage reminds us frequently to stay in the step we are on. Right now, it’s just about getting the story out. And that seems to be going fairly well. The story has taken turns I didn’t expect, but I think add layers to the characters.
Today I will be starting on a real-world scene, so I’m hoping that it will flow easily. I’ve got the live session with Sage and the other B90 gals in 45 minutes. I think I want to try to do a CSB page before we start so that my creativity will be ready when the writing portion gets started.
